ok clarification time
i think its important to clarify the role that rod (my ex) plays in my life right now. as a child of diplomat parents, i fall very neatly into the whole "third culture kid" category. i've moved around my ENTIRE life and haven't ever lived anywhere longer than 2 or 3 years. this makes it EXTREMELY difficult to find lasting friendships and therefore, when i do, i like to keep them going.
rod is one such lasting friendship. although we dated pretty seriously for about 10 months, we were in high school so we knew it wouldn't last forever. so when we got to college we broke up. but because he's one of the few people i know in this country, we've stayed very close friends. its one of the few relationships that i have been in where both parties can stay friends.
we talk about once a week (sometimes more if something is going on) and he's really more like family than an ex. when i talk to him, i don't think "this is my ex boyfriend". i think "this is the guy who has proven to be there when i needed him as a friend". since we have both moved on in dating and such, i think its even easier for us to be friends.
i've been thinking alot about the whole slip up with "sweetie" thing. i think the other reason i said it at that time was because i was in bobby's room with bobby. so my mind was set on bobby, not rod. its not a big deal to talk to him in front of bobby because i would do that with any friend (like my best friend sylvie who calls often). so i don't even think of him as an ex. he's on the level with my other close friends.
i called him "sweetie" because i was worried about him getting in a fight with some guy. i was worried because his parents are in the military and live in greece (mine are in russia now) and therefore too far away to help him if he needed it. since he is in alabama and i'm in virginia, i'm also too far away. so he's on his own except for the friends he's made since arriving at college. so no one who has any history with him is nearby. that scared me because you never know who you can depend on.
