i think "oy" is the appropriate word...
ok, just got off the phone with the Orthodox Rabbi here in Charlottesville. Bobby had talked to him yesterday at the passover seder and mentioned that i have been considering judaism. so the rabbi told him he's talk to me and bobby gave him my number. wow... that was kind of intimidating.
it was a short conversation where he told me that the process of orthodox converstion is long and hard and how i'm going to have to know all the commandments, all 670 of them or something (man, christians got off easy with 10...), and stuff. also, he told me i should think about how my family would feel and how my friends would react. frankly, i don't think anyone would care. i mean, i'm not naturally very in your face about religion. so i doubt i would become any more fantatical.
sigh.
i dunno... it just seems like everything bobby is telling me and even what the rabbi said... it just doesn't seem very welcoming. i mean, if someone wants to become catholic, its not a difficult process at all. you just catch up on the sacraments... i think... all i know is my mom had a pretty easy time of it. but here its like i'm going to be tested and questioned my whole life. that sucks. i guess i just don't understand how any religion can give the impression of turning people away.
there are those commercials on tv where the gay couples try and go to the church and get turned away by the bouncers. everyone i know thinks that is just wrong. but i'm sorta feeling like thats happening here. and it sorta hurts.
stuff to think about i guess.
